This is the finished piece, measuring 20" x 8". Gondolas look very dark here, hope you can enlarge and see the detail in this corner.
Here are a few cropped photos as the work progressed.
It was lots of fun as the sky changed colour radically and the darker corner (where the gondolas are) changed a lot in respect of shadow, moving water and the addition of the poles.
Clive reckons the light shows the scene as it would be just before dusk.
I think I might try some more another time from the sketches Anita and I have been doing from the BBC Art programme series POWER OF ART. Nothing like getting the feel for Italy 6 months before you go!!!

Wow! You and Anita in Italy together, sketching, touring, taking tons of photos! Great for us - and you both :) I like the darkeness of the gondola in this and the light of the domes.
How exciting. I know that you will have a wonderful trip and looks like you are getting mentally prepared. Terrific painting.
Ooh, I'm envious - wish I could join you and Anita in Italy, and what a good idea to practice the subject before you go. I was so impressed with your surfer reflections and sketchbook pages Joan - lovely work!
Great painting Joan. You two are so excited already I cannot image what you will be like come May :D
I like the botanical sketches you have done recently too.
You will be a pro at outdoor painting by the time you get there. Would love to see that country myself - but will have to be content to wait for your blog posts when you return. You will both be prepared, and that's always a good thing!
These are beautiful- make me want to go back to Venice today! I have a pile of photos we took there, but am nervous about painting them-you have motivated me. I just did a blog post recently about painting postcards from trips- you should make these into postcards to mail back from your trip!

What wonderful plans you have. You will have a great time in Italy. These paintings on Yupo are fantastic!
Thankyou everyone for your kind comments. Yes, its a long time before our trip arrives next year, but good to get it at a reduction. Lots of time to practice architecture. 'Fraid can't take YUPO paper out into the streets with me to work wet on wet, they'll just have to be sketchbook pieces. I have just ordered a new handmade 7" x 7" watercolour sketchbook from Karen Jinks like my garden sketchbook but with more appropriate covered fabric for Italy.
Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!
Just 221 days to go Joannie! LOL!
