I initialliing created a light watercolour to help me understand it more and as you can see I made an error with the back of the last pew to the left of the font, as I was leaving out the panels used for hanging the paintings and the card stand. So it had been worthwhile.
Here are two stages of the oil to date using my lovely vibrant Michale Harding paints. I used Unbleached Titanium, raw sienna, yellow ochre, Napthol Red and King blue in the font steps and base.
Pity the rich colours of the pews and the designs at the top of each panel dont show well here. I mainly used Michael Hardings lovely Red Umber with Napthol red for this rich wood. (You might like to click on the image and get a larger more detailed version where you can also see the sketchy flowers I plan to add).
... but I've just edited this post and added a closeup of the back of the pew - please note more blending and work to be done on the reflected colour on the step.

It's going to be a stunning painting, Joan. I already love the watercolor, even if it was only done as a preliminary study!
Coming along beautifully Joan, the arches are drawn so well...you're so good at those!
Watch the font steps, they will appear marble rather than stone with too much reflection.
Thahnks Casey - tried to do an hour or so today although we have our grand daughter and her boyfriend with us over the holiday weekend. Thanks for the tip Anita. Shame the subject is where the exhibition is being hung, otherwise I'd prefer them to shine like marble but it would not be realistic. Pity.
I agree Joan. I love your shiny floors, you do them so well but I also agree it has to be realistic to hang in the venue.
What a shame we have such terrible weather for your GrandDaughter's visit...Say 'Hi' for me.

Thanks Anita and Robert. Been out every day (despite rain on sunday)
with Channais and Josh, so have not touched the oil painting except one hour on the first day when they were relaxing in the lounge.
